Mary es una niña inglesa nacida en la India. Sus padres no se preocupan de ella, y como nadie la quiere, es solitaria, antipática y amargada. Sorpresivamente queda huérfana y es enviada a Inglaterra, a la casa de campo de un tío. Pero éste -un hombre viudo, hosco y triste- casi nunca está allí.

La mansión, situada en medio del páramo, es inmensa, con un enorme jardín. En él hay un sector amurallado, cuya puerta, oculta bajo la hiedra, está cerrada con llave. Hace diez años que el tío, luego de la muerte de su mujer, prohibió abrirla.

Mary is an English girl born in India. Her parents do not care about her, and as nobody loves her, she is lonely, unfriendly and bitter. Surprisingly, she is an orphan and is sent to England, to an uncle's country house. But this one - a widowed, sullen and sad man - is almost never there.
